Soldiers League is a fantastic idea and I am really proud to have been asked to be the inaugural President.

It gives both the old and bold like me, and those still serving, an opportunity to give something back to the game we love in order to help it prosper within the Army and to keep in touch with those whose friendship was forged in the adversity and camaraderie of the greatest game and then extended throughout our military careers.

And finally it enables us to help fellow ex-service personnel less fortunate than ourselves.

We are starting from small beginnings, but I am confident this association will grow from strength to strength as we gain a reputation as something worth joining, something that makes a difference, by meeting our three objectives of:

• Being an Alumni Association for all serving or retired soldiers who have played or officiated at Rugby League within the British Army, in order to promote, foster and maintain links between the Association's members and encourage their support for Army Rugby League representative teams.
• Raising funds to help enable Army Rugby League teams or individual players play the game at the highest levels possible, where this would have been curtailed by financial hardship.
• Disbursing surplus income to selected Service Charities.
